동아시아 민주주의에서의 생존 기록은 최근 한국의 정치적 위기가 드러낸 여러 광범위한 흐름을 되새겨 보게합니다. 

계엄령 선포는 제도적 민주주의의 위기일 뿐만 아니라, 냉전부터 현재까지 동아시아 전역에 걸쳐 울려 퍼진 식민주의, 군사화된 남성성, 초자본주의적 미디어화, 파시스트적 근대성의 최신적 발현이었습니다.

우리는 이 시리즈를 통해 묻습니다: 민주주의와 계엄령 사이의 동시성은 무엇이 가능하게 하는가? 남성성과 주권 사이의 관계는 무엇인가? 계엄령을 더 이상 예외적 사건이 아닌 식민주의-군국주의의 운영 방식(modus operandi)으로 재고할 때 어떤 일이 벌어지는가? 미셸 조, 타카시 후지타니, 에린 Y. 황 교수를 토론자로 초청하여 계엄령 위기의 예외화(exceptionalization)를 문제 삼고 동아시아 전역의 민주주의에 대한 비판적 고찰의 장을 열고자 한다.

Our proposed film screening series “Cinematic Witnesses: Documenting Survival in East Asian Democracies” reflects on a number of broader trends illuminated by the recent political crisis in Korea. The declaration of martial law was not only a crisis of institutional democracy but the latest manifestation of colonialisms, militarized masculinity, hypercapitalist mediatization, and fascist modernity that have reverberated throughout East Asia from the Cold War to the present.

The series brings together three films: Kim-Gun (September 13, 7pm, Innis Town Hall), Close to the Bone (September 27, 7pm, Innis Town Hall), and Untold Herstory (October 24, 3pm, William Doo Auditorium). We ask through this series: What enables the synchronicity between democracy and martial law? What is the relationship between masculinity and sovereignty? What happens when we rethink martial law no longer as an exceptional event but as the modus operandi of colonialism–militarism?

Featuring Professors Michelle Cho, Takashi Fujitani, and Erin Y. Huang as discussants, we aim to trouble the exceptionalization of the martial law crisis and open up a space for a critical examination of democracies throughout East Asia
